Week # 19 James 1: 2-3

James 1: 2-3James 1: 2-3
English: World English Bible - WEB

2 Count it all joy, my brothers The word for “brothers” here and where context allows may also be correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.”, when you fall into various temptations, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

WP-Bible plugin

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Life + Trials = Pure Joy

How does that add up?  According to the world we live in it doesn’t.  Why would the writer of James even think to suggest pure joy as our response to facing trials that test our faith?  If you have time to read James 1:1-27James 1:1-27
English: World English Bible - WEB

The Letter from James 1 1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are in the Dispersion: Greetings. 2 Count it all joy, my brothers The word for “brothers” here and where context allows may also be correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.”, when you fall into various temptations, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. 7 For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord. 8 He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 9 But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; 10 and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. 11 For the sun arises with the scorching wind, and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in his pursuits. 12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him. 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. 19 So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls or, preserve your life.. 22 But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does. 26 If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

WP-Bible plugin
you will discover that James recognizes the benefit of the different trials in our life as a way of producing God focused perseverance that will achieve three things; mature us in our faith, make us complete in Christ, and  receivers of the crown of life prepared for those who love the Lord.  Our challenges in life have kingdom purpose even when we can’t see clearly while in the  testing of our faith.  Let’s not miss out on the benefits found in persevering through faith in Christ.

Would you agree that life is full of many kinds of trials?  You might be in the middle of one right now and thinking to yourself this concept is crazy.  I’m supposed to be joyful in this!  You don’t know what is going on in my life…..God can’t really expect me to be joyful!   Your right I don’t know what you are experiencing and I pray that you will find peace and joy in the Lord as we continue to explore this counter-culture call to seek after pure joy even in our storms.

What does it look like to either face a storm that is brewing or walk through a storm with pure joy?  I have a dear friend who I have had the privilege of watching and at times walking with her through a hurricane of life’s trials with her children.  I compare it to a hurricane because the intensity would change based on the winds and how close or far away she was from the eye of the storm.  When I first met her I was drawn to her warm smile and fun and relaxed attitude toward life.  There wasn’t any immediate outward appearance of distress.  She was joyful.  When I became aware of the intensity of her trials with her children I was taken off guard.  It was evident that the Lord was her strength and peace as she weathered the hurricane that was trying to destroy her family.  This storm hit land fall when one of her children began making a few bad choices in friends then it led down a path of disappearances, destruction of property, detention centers, and the waves and storm surge created from those events crashed down on the relationships within the family.   Just as she was able to get up to assess the damages from one wave the next child started  down their own destructive path.  As the storm howled and beat on her family she fought to subdue the storm of emotions within her own heart.  Why God? What did I do?  How did I fail?  Why won’t they stop?  Where are you God?  I should have……  Why didn’t I…….  How can I go on…..  Her only peace was found in her quiet time with the Lord and it was there that she found her pure joy in him that strengthens her as her storm rages on.  Her joyful verse is Nehemiah 8:10Nehemiah 8:10
English: World English Bible - WEB

10 Then he said to them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Don't be grieved; for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.

WP-Bible plugin
b “And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

My dear friend has been an inspiration to me to choose the pure joy of Christ to strengthen me and sustain me through my own trials in life.  She continues to preserver through what feels like a never-ending storm.  Her faith and trust in the Lord keep her anchored.  Her joy encourages others to trust and builds their faith and their love for the Lord.  She has defiantly kept her lamp lit and shinning brightly through her storm.  I’m so thankful for her light shining into my life and leading me to the strength of the Lord.

Many times the trials of life leave us feeling alone and in the dark.  When that happens we can turn the light on and strengthen our faith by remembering to turn to the truth of God’s word for encouragement.  Psalm 119: 105Psalm 119: 105
English: World English Bible - WEB

NUN 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet, And a light for my path.

WP-Bible plugin
reminds us that the word of the Lord is a lamp that shines on our path as we walk with the Lord through life.  So if we choose to keep our eyes on how big and faithful the Lord is then our circumstances will return to their proper perspective, small in the hands of God.  We are then able to consider life and it’s challenges through the lens of pure joy.  Don’t let your light burn out stay connected to the light of the world and our faith builder, Christ, and preserver as you shine brightly for him.  Does this mean we will be beaming with a smile all the time as we weather our storms?  No, it means that we can remain steady in the storm, anchored in our hope, able to trust we are secure in our heavenly Father’s care and able to be real with those who genuinely seek to come along side us.  When we are steady in our relationship with Christ it shines through when we find it hard to smile.

Even in the storms of life a rainbow can emerge if  His light is shining through the rain or the tears.  Keep a look out for His rainbows in your life!

Life + Trials = Pure Joy~ Make it true in your life!

Week # 8 Wisdom Builder Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust is something we begin to learn from the moment we take our first breath.  We trust unknowingly most of our early years.  Until one day we experience something that is hurtful or scary that awakens the reality that not everything or person is worthy of our complete trust.  Each of our life experiences have developed the level of trust we give within the relationships we develop and daily determine our level of interaction with the world around us.  These realities also play a role in how we trust God.

Proverbs 3:5-6Proverbs 3:5-6
English: World English Bible - WEB

5 Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, And don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, And he will direct your paths.

WP-Bible plugin

It isn’t easy to trust the Lord all the time.  We tend to reflect our trust level with the things of this world  into our relationship with God.   Our hesitancy to trust could be due to memories of how things have gone in the past.

Moving bring my hesitancy to trust the Lord into the spotlight.  Each move our family makes is an opportunity for me to trust God and lean on him to make my paths straight.  The last duty station move I was faced with the choice—- was I going to trust and lean on Christ or turn to my own understanding.   It was a struggle because, as many of my Military friends can relate, our moving assignments known as “orders” don’t always come at effective and helpful times.  This particular time we knew we would be moving and the decision on when and where was long overdue.  There was talk of the possible locations and housing was highlighted by all our friends who had been there as an “immediate” concern.  Deep in my heart I knew I could and should just trust the Lord with all of these details.  Each conversation, over the months of waiting, I had about the pending move chipped away at my resolve to trust.  The looks and words spoken continued trying to knock me off balance.  Maybe you can relate to these– “really you don’t ______ yet” and “what are you waiting for” or “if I were you I would have already______”?  These statements left me to question my peace I had in trusting God.  I was tired of feeling that way so I asked the Lord to “please give me a verse to cling to during this challenging time.”  Psalm 5:3Psalm 5:3
English: World English Bible - WEB

3 Yahweh, in the morning you shall hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.

WP-Bible plugin
was the answer and my motto for the move became “waiting expectantly on the Lord.”  It was like my trust banner that my heart and mind would wave in the face of doubts that would come my way with every new thought, opinion, and look.  The waiting continued to the point my husband had changed jobs just a day before the next assignment was given.  I’m pleased to report within a few hours of the long awaited news of our next assignment the Lord provided a house that has blessed the whole family.

Do you trust the Lord with all your heart?

Who’s understanding do you depend on when you are making decisions each day?

Do you believe if you submit to Christ’s way he will make your paths straight?

Remember straight paths can come in the form of right way of life, conduct or thought, and sometimes even experienced as smooth and unhindered.  Straight paths are not promised to be perfect and without challenges.

Do you have a story of when you chose to trust the Lord and he made your path straight?

I’d love to hear so join the conversation!

Week # 7 Wisdom Builder Psalm 100: 4-5

Happy Valentines week!   Would you agree that love is on the minds of many this month.  I think love is a good thing to keep in focus.  This weeks “Wisdom Builder” tells us how we are to come to the Lord— with thanksgiving and praise.   What reason does Psalm 100:4-5Psalm 100:4-5

4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, Into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name. 5 For Yahweh is good. His loving kindness endures forever, His faithfulness to all generations.

give for our adoration for the Lord?  It encourages a worshipful heart response to the goodness of the Lord who is faithful and whose “love endures forever”.

How has the Lord been faithful to you?   Have you been a witness of His enduring love for you and your family?  As you reflect on this treasure I pray it will lead you to express your love for Him with uncontainable praise!  I personally have so many reasons to praise him.  It is hard to decide what to share.  I’m blessed with a healthy family this flu season, with the freedom to study and share openly my faith in Christ, with a God that loves me as I am on the “good” and “bad” days, and with sisters in Christ that encourage me to not give up and be faithful.  God is good and worthy of all our praise!

How have you experienced God’s enduring love or faithfulness?

I’d love to hear about it. So please leave me a comment.

Happy Christmas Eve from my family to yours!   I’m looking forward to tonight’s traditional celebration of homemade Christmas Eve pizza and precious time with family and friends!   We have so much to rejoice for in this season of adoration!

Christmas Eve is a special time of year. Let’s seize this opportunity to rejoice in the anticipation of celebrating the hope of the world that came to dwell with us on earth.
