Personal Growth Reflections of Life

Salty or Sweet

Psalm 34:8-9

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.  Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.”

Salty or sweet, which do you turn to for a satisfying snack?  Choosing what snack to have is just one of our many daily choices.    The list of choices and decisions we make is endless!!!  It’s down right stressful at times wondering if we are making the right or the best choice. Doesn’t it feel good when we know it’s a good one!

I recently was able to experience that feeling of satisfaction.  It happened when I was rushing out the door to a meeting that would take me through the lunch hour.   What would I grab to keep my stomach from adding to the conversation?  This time it was an easy choice.   I had a bowl of fresh fruit ready to select from.   I gabbed a pear, my bags, and keys as I waved goodbye to my dogs, Sol and Kate.  Off to the meeting I went.  It was about the second bite into the pear when the thought broke through “I’m so thankful I grabbed this pear and not a cookie”.  I have a sweet tooth so any excuse to grab a sweet snack, I will.   As I enjoyed my snack, and the feeling of satisfaction from my good food choice, I realized the ability to make that choice began a few days earlier.

The phrase “taste and see that the Lord is good” came to mind and then the spiritual parallels of my choice started filling my mind.  I shared them briefly on  Facebook in a short video I posted.  Today, I want to dig a little deeper and start the conversation about these thoughts.  Ready?

When is the last time you calculated the number of decisions about food you make a day?  Research shows that we would estimate an average of 15, but in reality it’s an average of 200 separate choices that are just food related.  How many for a whole day?  An estimated 35,000 decisions are made by teens and adults a like.  No wonder we are stressed!  I mentioned earlier that the ability to make that good choice began a few days earlier when I bought the fresh fruit and put it in the bowl.   Spiritually speaking if we aren’t filling our heart and the file cabinets of our mind with good choices they won’t be there for us when we need them.  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” according to Galatians 5:22-23Galatians 5:22-23

.  For me to grab some self-control when I have just been rudely spoken to means I better cultivate it by spending time in the Word of God to know what it means.  If not, I won’t have the self-control available to make a good choice.   Our moment by moment need to make wise choices is why daily devotions are so very useful.   Daily I have experiences where a simple verse or two will stood out in my morning devotion and later helps me make a wise choice either in action or self-controlled inaction.  I thank the Lord when these moments happen because I know it isn’t my power but through the power of Christ in me

The reminder to “taste and see that the Lord is good” inspired me to take inventory of how I will continue to make sure I’m making good daily choices with the food for my body, mind, and soul.  Our bodies need a well rounded diet and exercise. Our minds need to be daily challenged to learn and grow, and provided positive reinforcement.  Our souls need spiritual nourishment that lifts them up for well rounded mental, physical, and emotional health.  For me I’m gonna keep digging into my daily devotions and study of God’s Word to taste and see that He is good in all things!  Why?  Because I know from experience when I draw close to Him I experience His goodness because I’m looking for it.

Draw close to the Lord and watch for His goodness as you taste and see that our Father in heaven is good.
