Personal Growth Reflections of Life Reflective Encouragement Tuesday Tidbits

No to Quitting.

WINNERS NEVER QUIT

Our greatest wins are accompanied by an inner battle cry of “YES! I can. YES! I will.”   Winners never quit. Quitting on a process means quitting on the result. This is not an attribute of an achiever. For high achievers, the demand or difficulty doesn’t matter as much as accomplishing the goal.

Sometimes, giving up looks like the best choice, but most of the time, it isn’t.

There are a few instances where surrendering, re-strategizing and going at it again is the best choice you can make, after all- we all fall down sometimes! When you notice that you are beginning to lose yourself, (your person, your principles, your belief, …), then restarting becomes not just reasonable but commendable. Notice that it’s not “quitting” it’s restarting. When you fall, the only thing that makes failure is not getting back up.

We all know that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. But how? Well, notice that the saying isn’t “when the going gets tough, the tough wait for someone tougher to come in and get going for them.” It’s about being a self-starter, even in the midst of failure and disappointment. Self-motivation, encouragement and determindness are very important in the journey of life. Don’t wait for anyone to take pity on you, don’t expect someone or something to come along and suddenly motivate you. It’s up to you to fuel your ship, launch it and drive it!

Where do you turn for encouragement when you’re running low on self-encouragement?

I learned a great deal of self-encouragement as I was in preparation for a triathlon with my training partner, Ursla. Though the workout was a familiar route with a couple of good hills, I found myself struggling to maintain my typical riding distance with Ursla, every other ride I lead the way with ease but not this day. We started to climb the hills and the higher we climbed, the more I dropped back, I struggled with every pump of the peddle, it was as though I had 25lb weights tied to my feet. I struggled both mentally and physically. All of a sudden I began to silently encourage myself with the affirmation “I can do all things through Christ who is my strength”. I crested the hill, only to see Ursla circling back for me with a confused look on her face, I shrugged my shoulders and we committed to finishing the ride. The last five miles while not as difficult as the long steep hill section were still a drain and drag. Finally we pulled into her cul-de-sac and Bobby; Ursla’s husband greeted us, jokingly commenting on my unusual delayed arrival. I shared with them both the details of my struggle. Halfway through my account, Bobby grabbed my bike and began inspecting it.

Guess why it was so hard to peddle? The back brake was stuck! I had just ridden about 11 miles with the brakes on. Sometimes, life feels so hard and much like me, you may not realize that you’re living it with the brakes on! It can feel as if there’s no other option than to quit and give up on the process, but I encourage you friend, keep going, keep pushing and with Christ’s strength, no matter the obstacle. YES! You can. YES! You will.

“Winners never quit; they re-start!”

    1. Stay strong sweet Raquel! Thank you for the well wishes but this is a story from my past that I continue to gain perspective and determination from. I think you may have sparked an interest in me moving back in that direction again. Thank you for your inspiration!
